The arrival of the video assistant referee (VAR) changed the vision of refereeing in football forever and has emerged as an essential technology in the future of sport. MEDIAPRO BMS has offered the VAR system since 2017 and is amongst 2 of the world’s major providers of this technology.
The VAR system is basically a fifth referee positioned off the field, who can watch any play on multiple screens from multiple angles, including in slow-motion. The VAR referee can then advise the officials on the field. This new technology was tested for the very first time in the 2012/2013 season in the Dutch league. It was not until 2017 that the major European leagues incorporated it broadly, first in Italy and Germany (2017/2018 season), and later in Spain, France, and England.
In 2017 MEDIAPRO BMS signed its first VAR contract with the Portuguese Football Federation, the second was with the Spanish League followed by the Greek League. Since then, the service has expanded and currently the group provides VAR technology to more than 14 national leagues and several international competitions organized by FIFA, UEFA, CONMEBOL, CONCACAF, CAF and AFC. The video assistant referee technology is being increasingly implemented in other sports.
Currently, MEDIAPRO BMS has 90 Mobile VAR Units (VAR VAN) and 25 stationary VAR (VAR FlyPack) to serve its clients and their competitions through more than 100 countries on 4 continents. It also operates 4 centralised VAR Centres and has 750 professionals trained in VAR protocol and 200 FIFA/IFAB-certified Replay VAR operators. Video assistant referee technology is being increasingly implemented in other sports.

Since 2017 MEDIAPRO BMS has surpassed 23,000 matches as an official provider of VAR, gaining a strong reputation by supplying training, off-side line, video review services, coaching and tactical camera feeds to football leagues, championships and other sports.
